Honestly it depends... and for several generations I adored all of the starters (particularly referring to gen 1, 2, and 3). However, these were my picks on my first playthroughs: Bulbasaur, Cyndaquil, Mudkip, Piplup, Oshawott, Fennekin. I'm planning on getting Rowlet for Gen 7. It seems that I've chosen water for most of them... and usually grass is my second choice, then fire.
